Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Marumo Gallants on Sunday to seal their place in the Carling Knockout final after a 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants.
The Premier Soccer League defending champions scored their goals through Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Neo Maema to set a final with Magesi FC who had defeated Richards Bay by a solitary goal in the first semi-final on Saturday.
However, it was Ribeiro's goal from the penalty spot that caught the attention of the fans. The 26-year-old fooled goalkeeper Washinton Arubi to go right before going for a panenka, giving the custodian no chance.
The South American has now revealed how goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played a role in his decision to go for a cheeky technique to give his team a crucial opener.
‘I spoke to Williams' – Ribeiro
The attacker has conceded it was not an easy fixture, but is happy that things worked their way as they chase their first title this season.
“It was a difficult game. The opponent did very well, they were very compact and it was difficult to find space. But we are happy we made it to the final,” Ribeiro told the media after winning the Man of the Match Award.
“When it comes to the penalty, I spoke to Ronza at training and he said maybe you could try that in the game. So I’m very happy.”
Sundowns started the season poorly, which led to their elimination from the MTN8 Cup in the semi-final hurdle against Stellenbosch. They will now be aiming at going all the way to claim the Carling Knockout trophy against surprise package Magesi.
