Richard Ofori sends message to Veli Mothwa

Richard Ofori has sent a message of assurance to fellow goalkeepers at AmaZulu after joining the club as a free agent.

Ofori linked up with Usuthu, just before the transfer window closed, with his signing seen as a message to goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, who has experienced a tough time in recent weeks, following high-profile errors.

The Ghanaian stopper is, however, not keen to be dragged into the competition as he begins a new chapter at the club and is happy to compete with his colleagues for a starting place in goal.

Richard Ofori wants unity among the AmaZulu keepers

“I'm happy to be here in KZN again. It feels like home, as KwaZulu Natal was where I first arrived in South Africa. We’re here to work and continue the journey. The team is a big club, the oldest in the country, and I’m here to contribute,” said Ofori.

“The team has excellent goalkeepers, and together, we aim to work as a unit to help the club achieve its goals.”

Will Veli Mothwa retain his place as first-choice at Usuthu?

Mothwa did not cover himself in glory in his team’s opening match of the new PSL season when a blunder in injury time allowed Polokwane City to snatch all three points, the error coming a week after he made a mistake in Bafana Bafana’s 2-2 draw with Uganda.

The goalkeeper was heavily criticised by fans who called on coach Pablo Franco Martin to drop him and although the tactician vehemently defended him, he took him out of the spotlight in their next match against Kaizer Chiefs, with Olwethu Mzimela starting in goal.

It will be interesting to see whom Martin settles on as his first-choice goalkeeper following the arrival of ex-Maritzburg United man Ofori, who has spent the last four years at Orlando Pirates.
