Rulani Mokwena has reportedly been granted a stay of execution by the Wydad Athletic Club board following the team’s recent spate of poor results.
Mokwena’s position came under focus last weekend when Wydad suffered an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Maghreb of Fez in the Moroccan Botola, extending their winless run to three matches.
Ten-man Wydad took the lead but capitulated later, suffering their fourth league defeat in 16 games, which leaves them in sixth position with 24 points, 15 behind leaders RS Berkane.
Rulani’s position not under threat for now
That left Mokwena answering questions about his future with the Wydad board, led by president Hicham Ait Menna, later meeting over the team’s performance.
“To what the future holds is for the club to decide, but I want to be here…with all my heart because I love the club and I am doing my best, but we have to win as coaches, and we have not won enough matches yet,” Mokwena said on Sunday.
However, after the meeting, the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has been given time to turn around the club’s fortunes as there is a feeling that their current woes are not just down to the coach.
How do Wydad plan to solve their woes?
The management also feel they bear some responsibility, especially on recruitment, with some of the players brought in in the off-season not living up to expectations.
A Moroccan coach is also reported to be close to joining Mokwena’s technical bench to help smoothen up his working environment with the club also looking to make further additions to the squad.
Mokwena’ team have an away clash against second from bottom Moghreb Tetouan on Saturday January 4, a match they must win to bring the confidence back among the Wydad family.
