Rulani reacts to reports about Wydad’s search for local assistant coach

Following their 4-1 defeat to MAS Fes last week, Wydad Athletic Club reportedly held an emergency meeting.

One of the resolutions from this meeting was to support coach Rulani Mokwena by appointing a local assistant coach who possesses a deep understanding of the Moroccan game.

Wydad bounced back to winning ways on Saturday, securing a narrow 2-1 victory over Moghreb Atlético Tetuán in a Botola Pro League match.

This win provided much-needed relief for Mokwena's team, who had endured three consecutive matches without a win, culminating in the demoralizing 4-1 loss.

With this victory, Wydad moved to fifth place in the league with 27 points, trailing log leaders RS Berkane by 12 points but only three points behind second-placed AS FAR.

Addressing reports of Wydad appointing a Moroccan coach as his assistant, Mokwena stated, “We played eight games, we went seven unbeaten. And we lost just one game [4-1 against MAS], and it was a disaster. Like the world was coming to an end.”

Mokwena currently has former Mamelodi Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge coach Themba Badela as his assistant coach.

DOES RULANI APPROVE ADDITION OF LOCAL ASSISTANT COACH?

“I don’t know, and that’s for the club to decide,” Mokwena said.

Reports indicate that Mokwena has been given an additional month to improve results at Wydad, with a specific points target set for their next four league matches.

Meanwhile, in-form Cassius Mailula extended his impressive assist streak to five in as many matches by setting up Mohamed Rayhi for Wydad's second goal.

Rayhi scored a first-half brace for the visitors, including a penalty, while Mohamed Rahim netted for the home team.
