SAFA comes clean on Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka’s salary

SAFA has provided details of the salary of South Africa U20 coach Raymond Mdaka following recent revelations that he does not earn more than R25,000.

Madaka led Amajita to the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations title when they beat Morocco 1-0 in the final in Egypt but days after that win, it emerged that his pay is very low, in contrast to what Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Bross takes home.

Speaking to Metro FM, former SAFA technical director Walter Steenbok claimed Mdaka earns what Broos pay for rent, claiming the Amajita coach is on a one-year contract with a monthly salary that does not exceed R25,000.

“On the FIFA organogram, the TD and the coach are on the same level, even with the same responsibilities. I want to go further, coach Mdaka does not earn more than R25,000 and is on a one-year contract,” said Steenbok last month.

“We fought for two years to get coach Raymond the contract. You can call the coach and ask him.”

On Tuesday, SAFA was put to task over Mdaka’s salary when its top officials, including president Danny Jordaan, CEO Lydia Monyepao and NEC members appeared before the parliamentary committee for Sport, Arts and Culture to respond to a number of issues.

Makashule Gana from RISE Mzansi raised a number of questions regarding Mdaka’s pay which were answered by Monyepao.

“Is it true that the Amajita coach earns less than R30,000 per month?” Gana asked to which the SAFA CEO responded: “It’s not true”, leading to a follow-up question.

“He earns more than R30,000?” Gana asked again with Monyepao replying: “Yes, he does.”

Gana then asked: “Is it more than R50,000?”, “No. That I know of,” was the SAFA CEO’s response this time.

Gana then sought to display the huge pay disparity between Mdaka and Broos.

“The coach of Bafana Bafana earns more than a million per month?” Gana further asked, to which Monyepao replied: “Yes, that’s true.”

In what would be a surprise to many, Monyepao also revealed that Mdaka will not be getting any bonuses for winning South Africa’s first-ever U20 AFCON title.

“Did SAFA make a bonus available for the coach of Amajita for winning the U-20 AFCON?” Gana prodded and the SAFA CEO said: “No, we don’t receive bonuses.”

Mdaka has been Amajita coach since March 2024 and guided South Africa to the 2024 COSAFA Cup win when they beat Zambia 2-0 in the final to claim the championship trophy without conceding a goal while scoring 16.

They are also set to feature at the 2025 U20 World Cup set to be staged in Chile in September.
