Shock as coach ditches Chiefs for AmaZulu

Premier Soccer League outfit  AmaZulu have confirmed the appointment of former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane and Vusimuzi Vilakazi as the club's co-coaches.

The position fell vacant on Monday, September 30 when Pablo Franco Martin was shown the door after Usuthu's poor start to the 2024/25 season. Usuthu have lost all their three games: they started with a loss against Polokwane City, Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants.

The AmaZulu management had no option but to make amends with the technical team before it was too late.

Zwane to coach AmaZulu alongside Vilakazi

In a shocking turn of events, the club has now confirmed Chiefs' reserve team tactician and former senior team coach as their main man alongside Vilakazi.

“Usuthu has officially named Arthur ‘1011' Zwane and Vusimuzi ‘Kanu' Vilakazi' as the joint first-team head coaches in a move that will see the South African-born coaching duo assume their roles with immediate effect.

“AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu confirmed the appointments, expressing confidence in the pair's ability to lead the team through the challenges of the Betway Premiership.

“‘Their combined experience as both coaches and former professional players will be crucial in developing our younger talents and guiding our seasoned players in the task ahead,'” Said Zungu.

The Zwane story

Zwane has served on numerous occasions as Amakhosi's assistant and interim coach, but in the 2022/23 season, he was given the full mandate to steer the team forward.

However, he struggled to deliver; a season later, he was relegated to assist Molefi Ntseki who succeeded him. The duo failed to get it right prompting the management to fire Ntseki and further demote Zwane to the reserve team as the Head of the Academy development.

Recently, Dillon Sheppard was introduced in the reserve team's set-up as Vel Khumalo's co-coach and it is interesting to see whether he will take Zwane's role.
