‘Never had any problems’ – Ex-Pirates star defends Sirino over attitude issues

Former Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus has defended Kaizer Chiefs star Gaston Sirino over claims of a poor attitude from the Uruguayan playmaker.

Sirino was recently reported to have left his coach Nasreddine Nabi and the Chiefs’ hierarchy concerns over his attitude with claims that he fakes injuries and skips training without excuses only to show up just days to matchday.

It is an issue that has raised questions over his professionalism with fears that the club could look to terminate his contract if he does not change but Erasmus has come to the defence of his former Mamelodi Sundowns team-mate.

“Sirino is a great guy; he works hard in training, and he loves being his own human being,” Erasmus, who played with Sirino at Sundowns between 2020 and 2022, told SoccerBeat.

Gaston Sirino

“He can be very playful off the field. I’ve never had any problems or issues with him while I was playing with him at Sundowns.

“You can see the impact he has as a player; when he’s in the mood, he brings his A-game. He still struggles with English, but when I play with him, we’ll communicate without even speaking to each other. That just shows you the football brains he has. If you are not alert around him, he might pass you the ball without you expecting, and you’ll look bad.

“So, he’s one of the smartest players, he’s unpredictable, and you must always be ready as an attacking player when he has the ball.”

Despite his off the pitch issues, Sirino has so far delivered on the pitch with two goals and four assists in nine games since joining Chiefs as a free agent in the off-season.
