Sirino on whether he’d welcome opportunity to play for Bafana Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs attacking midfielder Gaston Sirino has stated he’d welcome an opportunity to represent Bafana Bafana.

Having been in South Africa since January 2018 when he signed for Mamelodi Sundowns, Sirino, aged 34, became eligible for Bafana selection at the beginning of 2023.

His eligibility through naturalization by residence followed the acquisition of his South African ID and passport.

The 34-year-old, Sirino said he would be happy to play international football. However, he admitted that it would be difficult to get selected considering young exciting players that Hugo Broos has.

‘THE HARD THING I’M NOT YOUNG’

“Of course, everyone wants to play for a national team,” said Sirino during the club’s media open day on Monday as quoted by KickOff.com.

“So, I’m here now with a possibility of playing for Bafana Bafana. But the hard thing is that I’m not young and we have too many good players here, so that is the reality with regards to Bafana Bafana.

“I think Bafana Bafana are good now and they play very good and different, so that is good.

He added, “Uruguay is a small country with about 3,5 million people but we have too many good players.

“All the national team players are with big clubs, so it is difficult for us to get the chance.

“At times, you need luck to play in the national team, but reality is that in Uruguay there are too many players at the top level.

“I’m very happy with my family here. Everyone is like my family now, so I’m very happy.”
