South Africa extinguish Malawi Flames to book CHAN 2024 ticket

South Africa booked their ticket to the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) tournament following a 2-1 aggregate win over Malawi.

Molefi Ntseki’s team had lost the first leg 1-0 and needed a win in the return match on Sunday to secure their ticket to the tournament which will be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August.

They did just that with TS Galaxy marksman Victor Letsoalo breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute having tormented the Malawi defence in the early exchanges.

There were no further goals with both sides going to the break tied 1-1 on aggregate but Ntseki made changes just before the second half started when he took off Kamogelo Sebelebele and brought on Kamohelo Mahlatsi.

Who will Bafana face at CHAN 2024?

Mahlatsi became a big threat for the Flames defence and his impact would be felt when he was involved in the build-up for South Africa’s second goal which was scored by captain Neo Maema after an assist from Letsoalo.

The win saw Bafana Bafana secure a 2-1 win on aggregate and a ticket to the tournament which is reserved for players only featuring in local leagues.

South Africa had won 4-2 on aggregate against Egypt in the previous round before booking their place in the final qualifying round for the tournament and can now look forward to challenging for the crown in East Africa from August 2-30.

Bafana Bafana will now join Uganda, Niger, Guinea and Algeria in a tricky Group C at CHAN 2024.
