South Africa set meeting with Senegal in WAFCON quarters after huge win over Mali

Defending WAFCON champions South Africa topped Group C after a healthy 4-0 win over Mali on Monday night at the Honneur Stadium.

The West African nation had a good chance to advance as the pool's runners-up with a draw against the holders. Both teams came into the match on four points, but it was Desiree Ellis' led team that had a superior goal difference.

Ghana and Tanzania, who were also in the group, were left to fight for the quarter-final ticket as one of the best third-place finishers.

Ramalepe and Jane finish the job in the first half

Banyana Banyana started the game on a high note, securing a lead within the first five minutes. A mistake by Mali allowed South Africa to win the ball, and Jermaine Seoposenwe set up Lebogang Ramalepe for a cool finish.

In the 31st minute, the lively Seoposenwe was fouled in a promising position, giving Refiloe Jane a chance to beat the goalkeeper from the edge of the 18-yard area.

A 2-0 lead at the break was definitely massive for Banyana Banyana who had struggled to make an impact in the 1-1 draw with Tanzania.

Donnelly and Magaia seal the deal for South Africa

Coach Ellis made several changes after the break to ensure her key players remain fit ahead of the quarter-final.

The hungry Banyana Banyana scored their third in the 61st minute when Karabo Dhlamini assisted Hildah Magaia for a fine finish to make it 3-0.

A special moment for the team came in the 78th minute when Ronnel Donnelly controlled a pass from Nonhlanhla Mthandi to get her maiden goal for the senior team and ensure Banyana Banyana win 4-0.

Who awaits South Africa in the quarter-final?

The defending champions will now play Senegal in the last eight of the biennial competition. The West African nation was among the best third-placed finishers alongside Mali who will now play hosts Morocco.

Ghana finished second to set up a date with Algeria as Nigeria face Zambia in another quarter-final fixture. The last eight hurdle will be played on July 18 and 19, with winners advancing to the semi-final.
