South Africa vs Zimbabwe: The numbers that point to a Bafana Bafana win

Published on by

Bafana Bafana take on Zimbabwe in their final group stage match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and they will need to avoid defeat to seal a place in the Round of 16.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have faced off numerous times in recent years, including in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and will renew acquaintances two months after playing out a barren draw.

Ahead of the match, the statistics are stacked in South Africa’s favour and whether that will yield a win remains to be seen.

South Africa will be facing Zimbabwe for the 19th time in Marrakech on Monday, winning nine while the Warriors have claimed six victories. Three matches have ended in draws.

In their last five meetings, South Africa have three wins while two ended in draws, Zimbabwe last beating them in September 2013.

He has three wins and two ended in draws. The first meeting ended 0-0 in September 2021 before 1-0, 3-1 and 2-0 wins respectively and their last matchup ended goalless in October 2025.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is on the verge of joining South African greats who have played more AFCON games as this will be his 14th match at the tournament.

He will join Shaun Bartlett as the fourth most player to play more games at AFCON only behind Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele and Mark Fish, who both have 16 each, Lucas Radebe (17) and John Moshoeu, who made 19 appearances.

That will likely act as an extra source of motivation for the Bafana Bafana captain.
