Stellenbosch fail to get past Agosto in CAF Confederation Cup

Stellenbosch and 15 de Agosto played to a goalless draw in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup's second preliminary round game played on Saturday.

Stellies have not had a good start to the season, especially in the Premier Soccer League where they have been struggling to win.

However, they have had a good run as far as Cup competitions are concerned; they reached the MTN8 final before falling to Orlando Pirates who were crowned for the fourth time in row. The Steve Barker-led men then eliminated Kaizer Chiefs from the Carling Knockout.

Having reached the semi-final last season, Stellies were keen on getting a positive result in Equatorial Guinea to stand a chance of advancing.

No breakthrough in Equatorial Guinea

The Premier Soccer League outfit came into the match hoping to get a win to make the second leg in Mzansi easier. However, it was not going to be an easy outing against their hosts who had defeated Foresters FC 4-0 in at the same venue to advance 4-1 in aggregate.

Nevertheless, it wasn't going to be an open game as the fans anticipated; the hosts wanted to avoid an away goal rule, while Stellies looked set to get a clean sheet ahead of the forthcoming meeting.

Eventually, the supporters had nothing to celebrate as spoils were shared at the end of the game.

Mngqithi, next assignment for Barker

The second leg between Stellenbosch and 15 de Agosto will be played on Sunday, October 26. The PSL outfit can fancy their chhnaces of getting a result at home to advance.

But before then, on Wednesday, October 22, Stellies will be at home entertaining Golden Arrows in the Premier Soccer League outing. Barker's men are in the unfamiliar 15th position with just six points from nine games.

Arrows have managed 13 points from nine games as well which puts them ninth on the table.
