Sundowns and Pirates Saturday’s result ‘won’t determine championship’ – Cardoso

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes the outcome between his team and Orlando Pirates this weekend will have less impact in the race for the Premier Soccer League.

The defending champions will host their rivals on Saturday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, hoping to extend their lead on top of the table. Currently, Masandawana have 39 points from 14 games – they have 13 wins and a single loss.

Orlando Pirates have 11 wins from the 13 matches they have played this season, which means they are on 33 points, the most they have acquired at this stage of the season.

It explains why the match this weekend is of a high profile and the majority of the fans feel so. However, the former Esperance coach Cardoso sees the game as just another top tier fixture.

‘It is just another match of football' – Cardoso

“I understand how we need to approach the game. That is the most important message we need to pass through to our players. Anyway, we’re in the process of growing the team and for sure it’s under that growth that we are gonna approach the game. That is basically what will happen,” he said ahead of the game.

“There are always details that we need to take into consideration. We’ll do it, but it’s just another match of football. And whatever happen in the pitch, it’s just another match. It’s just three points.

“Whatever happens, doesn’t close or open the championship. It will keep it open until the end for sure to balance two teams that have their qualities,” he concluded.
