Sundowns Held to Draw, Miss Chance to Take Top Spot

Published on by

It was a night of missed opportunities and high drama as Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by a gritty Marumo Gallants side.

The result at the Dr Molemela Stadium means Sundowns remain in second place in the Betway Premiership table, unable to capitalise on the chance to go top.

The match started with a bang, as Sundowns, under the guidance of coach Miguel Cardoso, came out firing. The recall of star striker Peter Shalulile paid immediate dividends, as he was a constant thorn in the Gallants' side, forcing an early save from the impressive Washington Arubi.

But in football, momentum can shift in an instant. Against the run of play, Gallants had a golden opportunity when Daniel Msendami was sent clean through on goal, but his shot narrowly missed the target, much to the relief of the Sundowns faithful.

That miss proved to be a turning point. Just minutes later, Sundowns found their rhythm and took the lead. Marcelo Allende delivered a beautiful cross that found the head of Rayners, who made no mistake in scoring his fourth league goal of the season.

NDLONDLO’S LEVELLER AHEAD OF HALF-TIME

Sundowns looked to be in control, but a moment of bad luck changed everything. A deflected shot from Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo took a wicked turn off the boot of Sundowns' defender Keanu Cupido and nestled into the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams helpless.

The goal leveled the score and ended Sundowns' long-standing clean sheet streak.

The second half was a relentless assault by Sundowns, who threw everything they had at the Gallants' defense. Coach Cardoso made bold substitutions, including the return of fan favorite Khuliso Mudau, who made his first appearance of the season after a long injury lay-off.

His energy and attacking presence on the right flank were a welcome sight for the home crowd. Striker Lebogang Mothiba was also brought on to add more firepower, but it was to no avail.

The Gallants' defense was simply unyielding, and despite being under intense pressure, they held their shape and frustrated the home side.

The final whistle blew, confirming a hard-fought point for Gallants and leaving Sundowns with a feeling of “what could have been.” The draw leaves Sundowns still chasing the leaders, while Gallants move up to a respectable eighth position.
