Mamelodi Sundowns outsmart Orlando Pirates to land Bafana defender

Mamelodi Sundowns have officially won the race for Thabang Matuludi’s signature, bringing an end to a prolonged transfer saga surrounding the Bafana Bafana international.

Matuludi, who has been absent from Polokwane City’s lineup this season since his return from international duty, is now set for a fresh start after a challenging period. The highly-rated fullback had been heavily linked with a move away from his former club, with two of the country’s biggest teams vying for his services.

According to SABC, Sundowns successfully outmaneuvered rivals Orlando Pirates to land the defender. The deal is reportedly a three-year contract with an option to extend for an additional two years.

Bafana star has had a meteoric rise

The intense competition between the two South African giants highlights Matuludi’s rising profile in the domestic league. Over the past two seasons, his consistent performances for Polokwane City established him as one of the premier right-backs in the Betway Premiership.

His impressive form earned him a call-up to the South African national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, further solidifying his reputation as a top-tier talent.

The signing comes less than a week after it was reported that Sundowns significantly increased their initial bid for Matuludi in an effort to secure his signature and were optimistic about finalising the deal which seems to have been completed.

Sundowns well stocked at right-back

The defender was spotted in Johannesburg on Wednesday before news of his imminent arrival at Sundowns filtered through.

Matuludi’s move comes three days after Sundowns announced the signing of ex-Orlando Pirates right-back Deano van Rooyen on a free transfer.

He will add depth at right back, joining Van Rooyen and Thapelo Morena, while proving cover for Khuliso Mudau, who is out with a long-term injury, as well as Zuko Mdunyelwa, who also sustained an injury last week.
