Mamelodi Sundowns players and staff are in for a massive treat after the club confirmed that their entire CAF Champions League prize money will go to them.

Sundowns ended their 10-year wait for a continental crown when they beat Moroccan side AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final on Sunday, adding a second star, following their first one in 2016.

It is the trophy the club craves and after coach Miguel Cardoso masterminded the win following a challenging campaign, it is time to harvest.

Harvest time for Sundowns players and staff

According to SABC journalist Andile Ncube, Sundowns will continue their tradition of handing the prize money to the playing unit, technical bench and staff this year, with the entire $6 million (R100 million) set to be handed to them.

“Mamelodi Sundowns players and staff will share the ENTIRE R100 Million prize money from winning the CAF Champions League. This tradition was started by the former Club President Dr Patrice Motsepe and continues under the Club Chairman,” Ncube posted on X.

Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe is maintaining the tradition started by his father, having expressed his satisfaction of the job done by Cardoso and his team.

“I feel proud of the coach and the group because that belief and conviction that I had was because of the group,” Motsepe told the media on Tuesday.

“I saw the way the group was wounded to the coach in the tough times and the way they hold each other together in the tough times. That gave me a lot of confidence

“At the same time, the things that we said during his [Cardoso’s] interview before he came to the football club. The ambition and vision that he had and how he wanted to instill his tactics and his philosophy in our football club.”

Sundowns players and staff are therefore in for a bumper harvest, a deserved reward for winning African football’s biggest prize.
