Veteran shot-stopper Kennedy Mweene has been appointed as Zambia’s new goalkeeper coach ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) confirmed Mweene’s inclusion in the revamped technical team led by newly appointed head coach Moses Sichone. Mweene, a legendary figure in Zambian football, brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career, which included over a decade at South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and more than 120 caps for the national team.
Known for his penalty-saving prowess and leadership between the posts, Mweene was a key figure in Zambia’s historic 2012 AFCON triumph. His transition into coaching has been closely watched, and his appointment marks a significant step in nurturing the next generation of Chipolopolo goalkeepers.
Mweene joins a technical team stacked with former Zambian internationals, including Andrew Sinkala and Percy Mutapa, as the squad prepares for a friendly against South Africa in Gqeberha on November 15, followed by a clash with Burundi on November 18.
With Zambia drawn into Group A alongside Comoros, Mali, and hosts Morocco, Mweene’s expertise will be vital in sharpening the team’s defensive edge as they aim to make a deep run in the tournament.
