Sundowns receive warning after pulling away from Pirates – ‘Six points is not enough’

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Eric Ramasike has cautioned against premature title celebrations, stating that the team’s current six-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership is not yet a decisive advantage.

The Tshwane giants extended their lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates with a convincing 3-0 victory against Siwelele FC on Wednesday night. However, Pirates still have two games in hand, which could significantly alter the standings.

Speaking to KickOff, Ramasike warned that the season is far from over. “It is still too early to become complacent; we should not let our enthusiasm cloud our judgment. This season promises to be even more challenging,” he said.

Sundowns told to make it nine-point lead

The former player believes a larger cushion is needed before Sundowns can be considered clear favourites.

“If we can extend the gap to nine points, then we might be discussing a different scenario,” Ramasike explained. “At that point, the season could effectively be considered secured. Closing a nine-point deficit against Sundowns is a difficult task.”

While acknowledging the team’s strong performance against Siwelele, the club icon stressed that the current lead is not insurmountable.

“While they played well against Siwelele, a six-point lead is not enough to declare them outright title contenders,” he noted. “Despite their victory, there remains a lack of decisive instinct.”

“Personally, I am not overly optimistic about the six-point lead; we must remain vigilant and avoid complacency,” the left-footed former star added.
