Sundowns warned against relying on Chiefs in Soweto derby – ‘Even Amakhosi can win PSL’

Published on by

Mamelodi Sundowns will be keenly following the Soweto derby on Saturday at the FNB Stadium between old rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The defending champions are currently on 38 points the same as Bucs who have an inferior goal difference. A win for Amakhosi will definitely be welcomed by the Brazilians who will be in action on Sunday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium against Sekhukhune United.

The Glamour Boys are currently on 30 points, having played 16 games, as opposed to the aforementioned duo, who have each played a game more.

Former Masandawana midfielder Roger Feutmba has warned his former team against depending on other teams to gain an advantage. He argues Miguel Cardoso’s men have what it takes to successfully defend their crown.

Sundowns have what it takes

“This weekend’s games are not easy, but a team like Sundowns is used to pressure because the mandate of the club is that you must win everything,” Feutmba, told KickOff.

“Pressure is what makes a big team. To achieve what you want, you must put up with pressure. Sundowns have what it takes to win this season’s league title. They are a strong team. It’s just that in football, there are always challenges.

“We have quality players who will go there and compete and win the league,” he added.

Don’t rely on Chiefs to beat Pirates

“I have watched Sekhukhune play a few times, they are a good team, so it is not going to be an easy game on Sunday. Sundowns can’t rely on Chiefs to hold Pirates for them, we have to do it out ourselves,” he continued.

“If as Sundowns we’re gonna win the league this season, then we need to focus on winning all our remaining games. It should not be about the Soweto Derby, we must do the job ourselves as Sundowns because even Chiefs can still win it this season,” he adds, while also taking note of what is going on with Bucs.

“Pirates are doing well even though they are not as consistent as Sundowns. They are a good team playing good football. Sundowns stand a good chance of opening the gap a bit this weekend because most of the games between Chiefs and Pirates finish in a draw,” Feutmba concluded.
