Thabiso Monyane impressed by Pirates’ Champions League run

Orlando Pirates defender Thabiso Monyane admits it has been tough competing in the CAF Champions League but is delighted by what they have achieved so far.

Pirates are featuring in the group stages for the first time in five years and have given a good account of themselves by securing four points from their first two matches following a 2-1 win away to Algerian side CR Belouizdad and a goalless draw with Al Ahly.

The Buccaneers visit Ivorian side Stade d’Abidjan in their next match on Saturday December 14 and the Monyane is expecting another great performance especially after they were lauded for keeping Egyptian giants and defending champions Al Ahly at bay.

“It wasn’t easy [against Al Ahly] especially for the teams to play at 3 in Orlando, but you know we managed to fight as a team, it goes to show that we’re not only strong going forward but defensively too,” Monyane said as per iDiski Times.

What gives Monyane hope?

“It’s something we have been working on and you know in times like this, in a tournament like this, you are going to be put on the back foot and I feel this was a tough test, a good test and we’re looking forward to doing more as we go forward.”

The right-back says it has not been easy facing sides from different nations given the Champions League inexperience within the squad but it is what they need to toughen up going forward.

“It’s been a good start for us in CAF, we’re looking forward to doing our best and as we take things one game at a time, and just take things as they come,” he added.

“It’s not easy, playing teams from different countries, you get to feel different leagues, intensities, the atmospheres as well, it’s not easy, it’s when you need to adapt as footballers and as a team, work as a team, unite and do your best.”
