Thabo Cele: Latest on ex-Kaizer Chiefs star’s move to Mamelodi Sundowns

On Monday, Kaizer Chiefs confirmed they have terminated the contract of midfielder Thabo Cele, on a mutual consent.

The 29-year-old had been with the team since January 2025, when he came in to bolster the then Nasreddine Nabi-led team. However, he struggled for consistency partly due to injuries and stiff competition in his department.

“Kaizer Chiefs have terminated Thabo Cele’s contract by mutual agreement, following constructive discussions between both parties. The decision will allow Cele to pursue new opportunities while Amakhosi continue to reshape their squad for the 2026/27 season,” Amakhosi said in a statement.

“The KwaMashu-born midfielder joined the Glamour Boys in January 2025, bringing international experience from his time in Europe and with the South African national team, and made his debut in the Soweto Derby the following month.”

Sundowns to benefit?

On Tuesday, there was a new and an unexpected turn of events regarding the versatile midfielder’s future.

“Thabo Cele has emerged as a high-priority target for Mamelodi Sundowns, with talks between the midfielder and the African champions believed to have reached an advanced stage,” SABC Sport reported.

“Sundowns have engaged the 29-year-old over a potential move, with the Brazilians understood to be keen on adding another experienced midfielder to their squad,” they added.

Now Kick Off have reported the Bafana Bafana international is very close to securing a new home, “Cele could be signing with Sundowns anytime soon. He has already done a medical with the club,” they confirmed.

Masandawana have already added Antonio van Wyk (SV Ried, Austria), Siyanda Ndlovu (Golden Arrows), Ricardo Goss (return from Loan), Cassius Mailula, and Deano van Rooyen to their squad.
