The striker is due for a medical at Standard Liege after ending his six-year stay in France

Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba is close to finalising a transfer to Belgian side Standard Liege after ending his six-year stay in France.

Mothiba parted ways with Strasbourg after an injury-ravaged spell, having initially joined from Lille, where he also did not enjoy a great time.

The striker managed nine goals in 32 league games in his first season for Strasbourg but injuries limited his appearances in the following years and last season, he could only play 15 games when he managed three goals.

Strasbourg decided to cut ties with him, then rumours over a possible return to South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs heavily linked resurfaced, after being spotted at the club’s base in Naturena.

Mothiba hopes his injury struggles will not affect his medical

It has now emerged that he is close to moving to Belgium with a medical planned at Standard Liege.

There is confidence that he will pass his medical, which is planned this week, despite his recent injury problems, and join the Belgian club who finished 10th in the league last season.

Mothiba will join teen sensation Shandre Campbell in Belgium if the transfer goes through after the 18-year-old ditched SuperSport United for Club Brugge, who he will be playing for in the reserve team next season.

The 28-year-old has 17 caps for South Africa with his last appearance coming in October 2023 before an injury saw him miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where Bafana Bafana finished third.
