The out-of-contract forward has been linked with a return to South Africa
Bafana Bafana forward Lebo Mothiba has fueled speculation over a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs following reports that he was spotted at the club’s headquarters on Friday.
Mothiba, who is a free agent, is looking for a new club after his six-year stint with French side Racing Strasbourg came to an end in the just-concluded season, and there has been reported interest from PSL sides.
According to FARPost, the forward was spotted at the Chiefs village in Naturena, leading to speculation that Amakhosi might be considering a deal for him as they look to strengthen their attack.
Chiefs are reportedly set to release Colombian striker Jasond Gonzalez at the end of his contract while the future of Congolese forward Christian Saile is still up in the air and there could be an opening in attack for a new recruit.
Mothiba wants to continue playing in Europe
The news comes a week after Mothiba quashed any links to the PSL while expressing an interest to continue his career in Europe after spending the last nine years in France, having started out at Lille.
“Here in South Africa I don’t know anything about [PSL interest], I haven’t spoken to any team here in South Africa,” Mothiba told Safa media.
“I don’t know what’s happening but my main focus is healing my knee, come back and continue playing in Europe.
“In three or four weeks I’ll be fully fit. So that’s why I just have to continue working and not rush anything.
Sundowns have been linked with an interest in Mothiba
“I must take it step-by-step because sometimes if you rush, you might injure yourself again and you are out for a very long time.”
Mothiba, who has been struggling with an injury, has also been linked to PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 28-year-old is currently focused on regaining full fitness from a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with South Africa.
Mothiba had made 15 appearances and scored three goals for Strasbourg this season before the injury struck.
