A European-based Bafana Bafana forward has confirmed having talks with Kaizer Chiefs over the possibility of returning home.
Chiefs are busy in the transfer market, beefing up coach Nasreddine Nabi’s squad, in a bid to return to their glory days.
Attacking players are among those they are looking to bring in and Bafana Bafana winger Mihlali Mayambela is a player that has interested the Soweto giants, leading to talks.
The player, who featured for both Chiefs and Orlando Pirates as a youngster, before signing for Cape Town All Stars from where he left to move to Europe, currently plays for Cyprus side Aris Limassol but he recently had an opportunity to return back home.
What has Bafana winger said about Amakhosi?
Mayambela has admitted to having had a conversation with Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr over a possible transfer to Naturena but he has opted against a move right now.
“There was a conversation. You know the club is moving in a different direction, you can see the amount of signings they’ve made now,” Mayembela said on SoccerBeat.
“So, they are busy trying to put a strong team, but also I’m in a place where I don’t need to move if I don’t have to. I’m here [Aris], playing every game, I have a big role in my team to play. I’m being respected here.”
Even as he remains committed to his current club, the 28-year-old is not entirely closing the door on a move to Chiefs in the future.
Mayambela leaves door open for Chiefs move

“But there is an interest from Chiefs and there were talks between me and the Sporting Director. He’s doing his job; he’s trying to build a good squad to bring back the glory days,” he went on.
“Being at Chiefs is my, maybe this guys’ dream [points to Mark Mayambela]. I don’t know if it will happen, [or rather] will it happen? Maybe I can say yes more than a no – but I don’t know when, it doesn’t only depend on me.
“Because also where I am at now, I’ve always said they really need me and I need them also, it’s a matter of making things happen.”
Mayambela has been at Aris since 2022, making 103 appearances in all competitions, and winning one league title and the cup.
