Tlhopie Motsepe discusses Sundowns’ transfer plans

Published on by

It appears Mamelodi Sundowns will maintain a highly strategic approach to squad adjustments, with Chairman Thlopie Motsepe indicating that no major overhauls are anticipated.

Instead, the club will exclusively target the right type of player – individuals who can seamlessly complement the existing talent and elevate the team to an even higher level of performance.

This selective strategy comes as Sundowns prepares for the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America in June, for which they've been granted an exceptional transfer window by FIFA to make early signings.

However, despite this unique opportunity, significant changes to the current squad are deemed unlikely. The team is currently intensely focused on the upcoming CAF Champions League final, fresh off securing an impressive eighth consecutive league title.

With stability being a key objective for the global event, where they are drawn in a challenging group with Fluminense (Brazil), Ulsan (South Korea), and Borussia Dortmund (Germany), any potential new arrivals are more likely to occur after their return from the USA.

SUNDOWNS CHAIRMAN ON TRANSFER PLANS

“We’re at that stage now where the season is drawing to a close, it will be a little bit difficult because of course, our pre-season will be cut a bit short, but it will be important to find opportunities to bring in a few players and give the coach a pre-season he didn’t have,” said Motsepe.

“If you look back at this year, the coach came at a time where he didn’t have a lot of time to pick his players or get to establish his style of football in the club, an opportunity that most coaches get when they come with a pre-season behind them.

“So, taking that into consideration, to see we’re in the final of the CAF Champions League, with the players he found there, is an incredible achievement and testament to the players, their character, and to him and the technical team – a lot of credit should be given.

“Of course, we will go into the market and look for the type of players that can complement, what we’re trying to achieve, we have a wonderful Sporting Director in Flemming Berg, as well his assistant Ryan Hunt and our board.

“We will definitely try our best to make sure the Sundowns you see next year – is one that is only building on better things to come.”
