Richards Bay coach Brandon Truter has paid tribute to his Orlando Pirates counterpart Jose Riveiro, lauding him for adding value to South African football.
Riveiro has been a success at Pirates since joining the club in July 2022, winning five trophies over that period, and his team are currently top of the PSL table with the maximum 21 points.
Pirates recorded a club record seventh successive league win when they beat Truter’s side 1-0 on Tuesday to open up a six-point gap over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
It was Riveiro’s 100th match in charge of the Soweto giants and over that period, he has won 61, drawn 20 and lost 19, a record that Truter impressed with.
Why is Truter impressed by Riveiro?
“Jose is one of the few foreign coaches that this country has seen and added value to the league so hats off to him we have good relations as well,” Truter said after Tuesday’s match.
“He has brought something different to Pirates, winning some cups and now, he is top of the table in the league so definitely there is a quality there and he is adding to the product. His squad has been consistent recently.”
Riveiro has silenced his doubters since arriving in South Africa, turning Pirates into a team capable of challenging for trophies while giving opportunities to young players.
His team has responded with three MTN8 and two Nedbank Cup trophies while they are looking to end their 12-year drought for a league title.
