Update on Kaizer Chiefs-linked former Orlando Pirates star Tshegofatso Mabasa

Established former Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa has on several occasions been linked to Kaizer Chiefs.

The towering attacker served the Sea Robbers until mid-last season, when he was loaned to Stellenbosch. However, upon the expiry of his contract with Bucs, the Soweto giants opted to let him go, as coach Abdeslam Ouaddou deemed him surplus to requirements.

The club has since confirmed the arrival of Norwegian striker Sebastian Pedersen from Sogndal Fotball.

Pedersen will now be competing with Yanela Mbuthuma, Boitumelo Radiopane and Evidence Makgopa for the starting position at Bucs. Pirates hope to successfully defend their Premier Soccer League title and make a statement in the CAF Champions League.

“The prolific goal-scorer has been the subject of growing transfer speculation in recent weeks. Kaizer Chiefs were at one stage believed to be leading the race for his signature, but that move never materialised,” KickOff reported.

“Moreover, AmaZulu FC were also linked with the forward, while Stellenbosch were understood to be keen on retaining his services following his loan spell. A number of Iraq Stars League clubs, including Sipho Mbule’s new home Zakho SC, are keeping a close eye on Mabasa.

“Al-Mosul SC, Erbil SC and Al-Shorta SC are amongst Iraq clubs that have expressed interest in the striker. However, a potential move to Iraq could prove complicated due to the ongoing regional security concerns stemming from the wider tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel,” they concluded.

It is interesting to see whether Amakhosi will push for Mabasa, especially after struggling to score in pre-season.
