‘Very intelligent’ – Pitso Mosimane picks Orlando Pirates star as best in PSL

Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane has picked the player he feels is currently the best in the PSL.

Mosimane has been watching the league from a distance as he continues with his work of nurturing the next generation of footballers at his Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools.

Having spent six years at SuperSport United, eight at Mamelodi Sundowns, the former Bafana Bafana coach knows the league too well and has seen plenty of talents gracing South Africa’s top flight.

However, one young player has wowed him and he believes he is heads and shoulders above the rest in the league.

While talking to Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide, the five-time PSL winning coach was asked which player he considers the best in the PSL presently and he picked Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng.

“Mofokeng is a top player. Very intelligent,” said the ex-Al Ahly coach, praising the 21-year-old for adding star quality to the league.

Mofokeng has become a revelation since bursting onto the scene in the 2023-24 season, showing great quality that has made him a match winner for Pirates during that time.

What makes Mofokeng special?

The School of Excellence graduate has a great football brain, which sees him change a game in a flash, with his chance creation and goal scoring abilities setting him a part from the rest.

Mofokeng was Pirates’ best player last season with 12 goals and 15 assists and has come up trumps in cup finals, settling the 2023-24 Nedbank Cup final, the 2024-25 MTN8 final as well as this season’s Carling Knockout final as the Buccaneers won the trophy last weekend.

He has, however, started this season slowly, with just one goal and three assists, but he still remains crucial to Pirates as well as Bafana Bafana which he will be part of at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
