Veteran PSL coach not convinced by Kaizer Chiefs despite Kruger United win 

Veteran PSL coach Owen Da Gama believes Kaizer Chiefs still have significant room for improvement and remains unimpressed by their opening-day performance, despite a victory.

Under new head coach Fernando da Cruz, Amakhosi kicked off their season with a 3-1 win against Kruger United FC at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. While many viewed the result as a positive start, Da Gama has expressed his reservations about the team’s overall quality.

Although Luke Baartman and Ethan Chislett earned praise for their individual contributions during the match, Da Gama was quick to temper expectations.

“I am not convinced by the team’s display against Kruger. Please believe me when I say that Kruger are likely to face difficulties this season,” Da Gama, affectionately known as ‘Rubber Doll’, told KickOff.

“I coached some of the players currently at Kruger last season. While Baartman and Chislett may have played well on Saturday, it was evident that the team Chiefs were playing against is still relatively new to the league.”

Da Gama argued that Chiefs should have dominated more convincingly and highlighted the defence as a major point of weakness.

Coach points out Chiefs’ weaknesses

“Chiefs could have performed better; their display was not convincing. My primary concern lies with their defence,” he explained. “I suspect the new coach may not be fully aware of the types of errors Ignacio Miguel committed defensively last season.”

Despite the critique, the Soweto giants currently sit at the top of the league table. Their attention now shifts to a crucial MTN8 quarter-final clash against Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
