WAFCON Honours Banyana Stars: Three SA Stars Make Team of the Tournament

Published on by

The exceptional performances of Banyana Banyana throughout the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been duly recognized, with a talented trio—Bambanani Mbane, Karabo Dhlamini, and their inspirational captain Refiloe Jane—earning well-deserved spots in the official Team of the Tournament.

This selection underscores the instrumental roles these players held in their national side's campaign.

In the defensive unit, Bambanani Mbane and Karabo Dhlamini anchored the backline with their formidable presence and unwavering commitment.

They were joined by Nigeria's robust defender Michelle Alozie and the experienced Ghanaian captain Portia Boakye, together forming a formidable quartet that proved incredibly difficult for opposing forwards to break down. Their inclusion highlights the defensive solidity and tactical discipline they brought to their respective teams.

The heart of the midfield was expertly commanded by Refiloe Jane, whose vision, passing range, and tireless work rate were pivotal. She was flanked by Ghana's dynamic Grace Asantewaa and Morocco's prolific goal-scorer, Ghizlane Chebbak.

WAFCON GOLDEN BOOT LEADS ATTACKING LINE

Chebbak's individual brilliance truly shone, as she not only captained her side but also claimed the coveted Golden Boot award for an astonishing second consecutive WAFCON edition, netting five crucial goals.

Her leadership and scoring prowess were key to Morocco reaching the final for the second time in a row, ultimately finishing as runners-up.

Up front, the attack boasts a potent mix of talent. Two formidable players from Nigeria's Super Falcons, Esther Okoronkwo and their influential captain Rasheedat Ajibade, led the line.

Ajibade, a forward for Atletico Madrid, further cemented her status as one of the tournament's standout individuals by also being crowned the Player of the Tournament, a testament to her consistent impact.

Moroccan striker Ibtissam Jraidi completed this elite attacking trio, offering a powerful goal threat. Between the posts, the consistent brilliance of Nigeria's Chiamaka Nnadozie was rewarded with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade, ensuring her rightful place in this prestigious WAFCON Best XI.
