Wandile Duba sends defiant message to Chiefs’ new strikers – ‘I’ll be number one’

Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba is backing himself to be the first-choice striker at the club despite the arrival of new forwards at Naturena.

Chiefs have been busy in the transfer market, adding 11 new players, and among them are strikers Etiosa Ighodaro, Flavio Silva, Luke Baartman and Khanyisa Mayo, while Ashely Du Preez and Tashreeq Morris were already at the club.

That increases competition for a starting berth at Chiefs with coach Nasreddine Nabi likely to reshuffle his attack this season.

Duba, who has been the preferred striker in four of the five games played this season, remains confident that he will still lead the line even if the competition is now high.

“I think last season I did show that I’m ready for anything and willing to be Kaizer Chiefs number one striker,” Duba said as per iDiski Times.

“I’m happy now that there’s [Etiosa Ighodaro] and Flavio [Silva] that I will learn from because they have been there. They always coach me at training. I’m ready to be number one.”

Duba says the new arrivals will only make him better and not stunt his growth as some have feared and he is looking to learn from them as they push each other.

“Even last season with other strikers, they were pushing me to work hard and be the number one,” he added.

“So, I don’t think with them arriving, it will change a lot. I will still train hard and if I have to play, then I’ll be number one.”

Duba was the highest scoring striker at Chiefs last season with five goals but he is yet to find the target this term and he will hope to end his drought soon to avoid losing his spot in the team after Silva scored on his debut just before the international break.
