“We are playing for 20 Million, Not 500k” – Mngqithi slams PSL after Chiefs loss

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi erupted in anger following his side’s 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs, a match decided by what he insists was a “blatantly offside” strike from Aiden McCarthy.

Speaking to Lerato Phago on SuperSport TV, Mngqithi was visibly seething, blasting the PSL’s lack of urgency in implementing VAR.

“The PSL will forever have issues for as long as this issue of VAR is not taken care of,” Mngqithi declared. He argued that referees are struggling to keep up with the pace of modern football and that technology is no longer optional but essential.

Offside Controversy Sparks Outrage

Mngqithi pointed to the decisive moment of the game: “If you want to see that this goal was offside, just wait for the touch that goes to Silva — McCarthy is already gone, he’s offside. Yet we lose the game and nobody cares. People say we don’t defend well, but the reality is the league must work very hard.”

The Arrows mentor emphasized that the game has evolved beyond human eyes alone. “The game has become too dynamic. It’s not us, it’s the game itself. Even officials cannot track these runs. We cannot always blame them — the game demands that we respond.”

Millions at Stake in the PSL

His frustration reached boiling point when he highlighted the financial stakes. “We are not playing for 500 000 Rands here, we are playing for 20 million Rands. We should be looking into this thing of VAR, otherwise we will keep losing matches like this and people will be okay with it.”

When is var coming to PSL?

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie recently travelled to Spain to meet with VAR service providers. He has promised that the system will be introduced in the Nedbank Cup, signaling a possible turning point for South African football.
