‘We know what we have to do’ – Broos sends strong message to Egypt

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up on his wish ahead of their game against Egypt.

Broos’ team started their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2=1 win over Angola in a frenetic game that could easily have swung either way on Monday.

South Africa went ahead first through Oswin Appollis’ 21st minute goal before Angola equalised in the 35th minute but Lyle Foster’s late goal won it for them.

Broos admits that his team was below-par in the first half and was delighted with the response after the break which gives him hope ahead of the match against Egypt on Boxing Day.

Broos unhappy with Bafana first half

“We tried to avoid that one [losing] because if we should have lost again today and then we have the game against Egypt you are big in trouble,” said Broos told SABC Sport after the match.

“I wasn’t pleased with the game we played in the first half. At just a moment we led 1-0 then we fell asleep, we let Angola come in back in the game.

“So, we put something right during half-time and you see the second half we make more pressure, there is more movement in the team and then we have chances and this is what I want.”

Which player impressed Bafana coach?

Broos was delighted by the performance of Orlando Pirates star Tshepang Moremi, who came on after the break and scored a great goal that was ruled out for offside on Foster.

“Tshepang did a wonderful come in the team, suddenly there was speed in our team, he was dangerous he scored a goal with an offside, I don’t know what happened there,” he added.

“But he was a threat for Angolans, and he did well for the 45 minutes he played.”

Asked about what he thinks of Egypt, Broos said he is happy that he will face them with less pressure but admits the Pharaohs are the type of opponents his team needs.

“That is another level also but those games are more for us. Angola is not a team you know very much and also the first game you play in a tournament it is also a rating of how we are and how we are not,” said Broos.

“Now we know what we have to do and we showed it in the second half so we will try to do it against Egypt and not losing the game would be very good.”

Egypt also started their AFCON 2025 with a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe.
