Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire confirmed the signing of Orlando Pirates sensation Mbekezeli Mbokazi following his good and consistent displays for the club and Bafana Bafana.

“Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has acquired defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates of South Africa’s Betway Premiership,” Chicago said in a statement on their website.

“Mbokazi will occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position, and his contract will run through 2029, with a Club option for the 2029/30 season. Per Club and MLS Policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.”

The Buccaneers have now confirmed the exit of the centre-back but revealed there is an agreement in place to ensure the 20-year-old will be part of the Bucs team which will play Marumo Gallants on Saturday, December 6 in the Carling Knockout final.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire for the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi,” Bucs communicated via their media team.

“The 20-year-old completed a successful medical and finalised personal terms with the Men in Red during his recent trip to the United States, paving the way for a move of a lifetime for the Bafana Bafana international.

“Following positive discussions between the management of both Clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025.

He will then embark on a new chapter of his football journey across the Atlantic, joining Chicago Fire as the next step in what promises to be an exceptional career,” they concluded.
