Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has emerged as one of the standout Championship performers of the 2026/27 season at Birmingham City, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 28-year-old joined Birmingham on a free transfer in July 2025 following the expiry of his Fenerbahce contract, but his debut Championship season was disrupted by fitness problems and the AFCON 2025 winter break that limited him to 29 appearances across all competitions.
Head coach Chris Davies publicly defended him at the time, but the narrative around his performances was that the Nigerian was struggling to adapt to life in the second tier of English football after four years in the Turkish top flight.

The 2026/27 campaign has told a completely different story. Osayi-Samuel recorded 16 possession recoveries against Sheffield United on the opening weekend of the season, five more than any other player across the entire EFL on matchday one, and has maintained that form across six games this.
3 factors behind Bright Osayi-Samuel’s Birmingham transformation
1. He needed time to adapt
The first factor is tactical adjustment. Osayi-Samuel spent four years at Fenerbahce operating in a Turkish Süper Lig environment where possession-based build-up football, technical duels and slower defensive transitions were the norm.
The English Championship demands a different tempo, with faster attackers, higher-intensity pressing patterns and considerably more sprint-based defensive recoveries.
Osayi-Samuel himself publicly acknowledged that the adjustment took time. His debut Birmingham season saw him repeatedly caught out by the pace of wingers.
The 12 months at St Andrew’s have now filled that gap. By his own admission to Birmingham Mail, the faster-paced game “back on English shores” has become a strength rather than the exposure it once was.

2. An improved fitness regime that closed the physical gap
The second factor is physical. Osayi-Samuel has been open in recent interviews that the fitness base he arrived at Birmingham with in July 2025 was not the level a full Championship campaign required.
His summer 2026 pre-season was very different. A revamped fitness programme has produced a player physically equipped to handle the intensity Chris Davies demands, and the results are visible.
3. Confidence built from settled defensive discipline
The third factor is psychological. Osayi-Samuel’s game historically leaned heavily on pace and one-on-one attacking overlap, but his transformation at Birmingham has been built around the more difficult side of defensive discipline, positional adjustment and tactical defending.
His opening-weekend clean sheet at Bramall Lane, followed by a run of forceful Championship performances, has given him the type of confidence that only comes from success against a high level of opposition.

How Osayi-Samuel compares with Aina, Alebiosu and Bewene
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle now faces a difficult right-back selection puzzle.
Alongside Osayi-Samuel, three other Nigerian internationals are firmly in the September AFCON qualifier conversation. Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina, Blackburn Rovers’ Ryan Alebiosu, and Banik Ostrava’s Abdullahi Bewene.
Of the four options, the analytical case for the September AFCON qualifiers starting-eleven selection points most strongly toward Bright Osayi-Samuel as the first-choice right-back, with Ola Aina as the left-back option, considering Zaidu Sanusi’s injury problems.

Aina’s Premier League standing makes him favourite for the left-back spot, even above Bruno Onyemaechi.
The Forest right wing-back is the only Nigerian among the other options to have played at the highest level this season, and that should count for something, considering Nigeria will want to start on the front foot in their AFCON 2027 qualifiers to avoid any slip-ups.
