Ademola Lookman transfer: Real reason Fenerbahce failed to sign Atletico attacker

Fenerbahce’s long-running admiration for Ademola Lookman was cut short because the Turkish giants believed he wouldn’t get support from their fans, Afrik Foot reports.

The admission came from former Fenerbahce technical director Ertan Torunoğulları, who has explained why the Yellow Canaries decided against making a move for the Atletico Madrid star despite previously attempting to sign him before his move to Spain.

Lookman has been linked with Fenerbahce on multiple occasions over the past year, with the Istanbul club first missing out on him during his move from Atalanta to Atletico Madrid before revisiting their interest earlier this summer.

However, Torunoğulları believes footballing reasons were not what prevented the deal from happening.

Why Fenerbahce refused to sign Ademola Lookman

According to the former technical director, Lookman simply did not fit the club’s immediate recruitment needs. Speaking to Fanatik, Torunoğulları said:

“We really wanted Ademola Lookman too, let me say that openly. But Lookman isn’t a full-fledged striker; he’s a left winger.”

While Lookman has played across the front line throughout his career, including centrally for Nigeria and during spells with RB Leipzig, Leicester City and Atalanta, his best football has come from inside the left flank, where he can attack defenders one-on-one before cutting inside.

For Fenerbahce, however, supporters were demanding an old-school No. 9 capable of leading the line rather than another wide attacker.

Torunoğulları believes signing Lookman under those circumstances would have immediately caused chaos within the fanbase, who have a very dramatic sense of airing their displeasure.

“This time, we’d have been criticized with ‘Why didn’t you sign a striker?'”

Pressure from fans influenced the decision

Beyond tactical considerations, the 54-year-old pointed to what he believes has become a recurring issue at Fenerbahce: the impatience surrounding new signings.

The former technical director suggested that even a player of Lookman’s calibre may have struggled to escape the scrutiny that accompanies major arrivals in the yellow side of Istanbul.

“Unfortunately, the same scenario keeps playing out at Fenerbahçe. When a player arrives, he’s praised for the first two weeks, then by the second or third week, he’s dismissed as ‘trash’ or ‘useless.'”

Those comments offer fresh insight into why the club opted against committing significant funds to a player who was not viewed as the solution to their goalscoring problems.

Atletico Madrid offer more than Fenerbahce

The decision looks even more understandable considering Lookman’s current situation.

After joining Atletico Madrid in January 2026, the Super Eagles forward has established himself under Diego Simeone despite operating within one of Europe’s most demanding and defensive tactical systems.

His combination of goals, work rate and defensive discipline has strengthened his importance at the Metropolitano, making any potential departure unlikely just months after arriving.

Financially, the move is also complicated. Atletico invested almost 40 million euros to sign the Nigerian and would almost certainly demand a fee significantly higher than what Fenerbahce were prepared to spend.

Was the decision right?

There is little doubt Lookman possesses the quality to improve almost any team in Europe. However, he wouldn’t have been the right player for Fenerbahce’s immediate needs.

Fenerbahce entered the market in search of a reliable goalscorer through the middle rather than another winger.

Passing on one of Africa’s finest attackers may appear surprising on paper, but Torunoğulları’s explanation suggests the decision was driven more by squad balance and supporter expectations than by any doubts over the Nigerian’s ability.

For Lookman, remaining at Atletico Madrid also appears the smarter outcome. The 28-year-old continues to play in one of Europe’s elite leagues and remains central to Eric Chelle’s plans with the Super Eagles ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
