Akor Adams keeps Sevilla’s top-flight hopes alive in Espanyol victory

Super Eagles striker Akor Adams played a crucial role off the bench to help Sevilla secure a point against Espanyol, Afrik Foot reports.

Luis Garcia’s side headed into the clash against Espanyol on the back of two wins and three losses in their last five games, a point above the relegation zone.

Espanyol were on 39 points heading to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, a point above Sevilla, and needed at least a point in a bid to avoid any late troubles in the final round of La Liga games.

How Akor Adams bailed Sevilla out against Espanyol

The 26-year-old looked like he’d fallen out of favour with Sevilla coach Luis Garcia, having started the previous two games on the bench, playing three minutes in total.

After a cagey affair in the first half, Espanyol broke the deadlock at the start of the second half through English winger Tyrhys Dolan, who tapped home after some brilliant groundwork from Roberto Fernández.

Knowing a loss would put the team at the risk of relegation, Luis Garcia sent on Alexis Sanchez, Djibril Sow, Juanlu Sanchez and Oso as they looked to salvage a point at least.

Akor Adams was sent on as a final act of hope by Garcia with 15 minutes left to play, and the decision paid off for the Spanish coach.

Seven minutes after coming off the bench, the Nigerian played a key role in Sevilla’s equaliser, flicking the ball to Djibril Sow, who then played a pass into Andrés Castrín.

The Sevilla centre-back went on a mazy run, unmarked, before placing his shot into the bottom corner of Marko Dmitrovic’s goal.

Akor Adams’ moment came in the 91st minute. The Super Eagles striker was fed by Alexis Sanchez.

He then took his time to position his curler into the bottom corner from outside the box, his 9th league goal of the season.

Adams took his shirt off in celebration, signalling to the Sevilla fans to take back their criticism.

Sevilla are now 12th on the La Liga table, five places ahead of where they were prior to the game against Espanyol. Still, they’re just three points above the relegation zone.
