Akor Adams has emerged as the favourite to become the second Nigerian to win La Liga’s African MVP award after Samuel Chukwueze, Afrik-Foot reports.
Chukwueze became the first Nigeria international to win the award after impressing for Villarreal during the 2022/23 season. The Super Eagles winger netted 13 goals, including a brace in 3-2 victory against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, and 11 assists in 50 games across all competitions for Villarreal.
Adams could follow in his compatriot’s footsteps into the La Liga record books.
The Sevilla forward has been one of the most reliable attackers in the league during the 2025/26 campaign. With seven goals and three assists in 24 appearances, he is currently the top-scoring African player in La Liga. More importantly, many of his goals have directly influenced results.

He opened his account early in the season and has since delivered in key moments, including a late winner against Rayo Vallecano, a decisive strike in a big win over Barcelona, and a brace to rescue a point against Elche.
A major turning point in his season came after the Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped Nigeria win bronze. Since returning, Adams has scored four goals in eight matches, showing improved sharpness and confidence. That strong finish to the season could prove decisive in voting.
Winning the prize would place him alongside past winners such as Yassine Bounou and repeat winner Iñaki Williams.
Akor Adams vs strong African presence in La Liga
While Akor Adams has a strong case, the competition is deep and varied, reflecting the quality of African players in Spain this season.

Among the top contenders is Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye, whose all-round displays have made him a key figure for his club. Close behind is his teammate Nicolas Pépé, who has contributed both goals and assists and remains one of the league’s most dangerous wide players.
Then there is Iñaki Williams, the two-time defending champion. His consistency over several seasons, combined with his leadership at Athletic Club, keeps him firmly in contention even without standout scoring numbers this term.
Elsewhere, emerging talents like Karl Etta Eyong of Levante have impressed, while experienced figures such as Thomas Partey and Eric Bailly add depth to a wide-ranging nominee list.
In total, 20 players have been shortlisted for the award, which is now in its fifth edition. Voting, which combines fan input and expert opinion, will run until May, with the winner set to be announced on Saturday, 23 May in Lagos, Nigeria.
