Three ways Al Jazira transfer will impact Anthony Dennis’ career

Nigerian midfielder Anthony Dennis has sealed a transfer to former UAE Champions Al Jazira in a deal worth €5 million, Afrik-Foot reports.

The transfer comes after months of speculation, as Dennis has been linked with many clubs this summer. Coventry City, Anderlecht, and Elversberg. But ultimately, it is Al Jazira who have been able to secure his services.

This is a big money move for the player, as he will now earn €5 million per year at his new club, per reports. In this article, we will write on three implications of this transfer on Dennis’ career.

1. Dennis Will Have To Become a Key Player

One of the biggest opportunities presented by the move is the chance for Dennis to take on greater responsibility.

The Nigerian arrives at Al Jazira as a 22-year-old midfielder who has already gained valuable experience in the Turkish top flight. At Göztepe, he developed into a trusted defensive midfielder, earning recognition for his energy, tackling, passing range and tactical discipline.

Al Jazira are also looking to build a team capable of competing for major honours again. The club finished fourth in the UAE Pro League last season and have brought Dennis in as part of their midfield rebuild, with the Nigerian effectively replacing former Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

That could give Dennis an opportunity he may not have immediately received at a bigger European club: regular starts and the responsibility of controlling games from midfield.

If he performs consistently, he could quickly establish himself as one of the standout young midfielders in the UAE.

2. The Move Could Make a Return to Europe Harder

Instead of moving from Turkey to one of those leagues, Dennis has now left European football altogether.

That does not mean his European ambitions are over. At 22, he still has plenty of time to return, particularly if he performs exceptionally well in the UAE. But the path will probably become more difficult because he will no longer be competing regularly in one of Europe’s major football markets.

The challenge for Dennis, therefore, is to ensure that the move to Al Jazira becomes a stepping stone rather than a destination.

If he dominates in the UAE, attracts attention in continental competitions and continues developing, European clubs could return for him. If his level stagnates, however, it could become much harder to convince clubs in England or Germany that he is ready for their leagues.

3. It Could Hurt His Super Eagles Ambitions

Dennis’ move also comes at an important stage of his international career.

The midfielder was included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2025, although he did not make the final matchday squad. His performances at Göztepe had already brought him into the conversation around the Super Eagles.
