Alex Iwobi: How Fulham star’s key EPL stat puts Man City, Liverpool stars in the shade

Published on by

Alex Iwobi is enjoying another impressive season in the Premier League for Fulham, even though his attacking numbers do not yet reflect the Nigerian midfielder’s influence.

The Super Eagles star is still waiting for his first assist of the 2026/27 campaign, while his first league goal of the season arrived at the weekend.

That strike helped Fulham secure a 1-0 win over Hull City, their first victory of the season, lifting them off the foot of the table.

However, beyond the meagre goals and assists tally, Iwobi has been one of the Premier League’s most creative players this season.

The numbers suggest the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder could already have several assists to his name if his teammates had been more clinical in front of goal.

Alex Iwobi leads expected assists chart

Per FotMob, Alex Iwobi tops the Premier League’s expected assists chart with a rating of 2.3, ahead of Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who sits second with 1.9.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki follow with 1.7 each, while Ipswich Town’s Julio Enciso completes the top five with 1.6.

Remarkably, Alex Iwobi is the only player in the top five yet to register an assist this season. Gakpo has recorded three, while Gibbs-White, Cherki and Enciso have two apiece.

Expected assist is a measure of the likelihood that a pass will become a goal-scoring assist, based on the quality of the chance created. Iwobi’s position at the top of the chart is a slap on the face of his teammates, who have evidently not made the most of the opportunities he has supplied.

His creativity extends beyond expected assists. The Fulham midfielder is joint-second in the division for key passes and has created six big chances, just one fewer than Gibbs-White, who leads that category.

Brighton midfielder Pascal Groß and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer have also created six big chances. Groß has four assists, while Palmer has three.

Iwobi is also fifth in the overall chances-created rankings, having fashioned 16 opportunities for his Fulham teammates without any being converted into assists.

Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz leads that chart with 20 chances created, while Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Marcus Rashford have each created 13.

Overall, Iwobi’s contribution to Fulham’s attack is significant, even as his personal numbers remain modest.

Last season, the Nigerian recorded four goals and three assists in 29 Premier League appearances. He enjoyed an even more productive 2024/25 campaign, finishing with nine goals and six assists.

Iwobi is already Nigeria’s leading appearance maker and assist provider in Premier League history, and his current creative output suggests more could follow.
