Alex Iwobi: 2 qualities that could trouble Newcastle in Fulham clash

Published on by

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is in contention to feature for Fulham in their gameweek 10 clash of the 2026/27 English Premier League season against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Iwobi has been one of Fulham’s most consistent performers this season, featuring in all of their league games so far. The 30-year-old has also found the back of the net once, scoring the lone goal in the 1-0 win over Hull City in October that marked their first league win of the campaign.

His performances have made him very key to how Alvaro Arbeloa’s side set up, as they look to build on their recent results and climb further up the Premier League table.

However, Newcastle will have to be wary of the threat the Nigerian midfielder could pose, especially given his ability to influence games in different areas of the pitch.

2 qualities that could make Alex Iwobi a threat against Newcastle

1. His ability to create goalscoring chances

One of Alex Iwobi’s biggest strengths is his ability to create opportunities for his teammates, whether he is operating in a deeper midfield role or playing further forward.

The Nigerian midfielder has developed into an effective creative outlet for Fulham, using his vision, passing range and ability to find pockets of space to open up opposition defences.

He is particularly dangerous during transitions, as he can quickly turn defensive situations into attacking opportunities with his forward passes and movement. His ability to pick out teammates in dangerous positions could cause Newcastle problems, especially if they allow him too much time and space on the ball.

Iwobi’s creative numbers this season also underline his importance to Fulham’s attack, with the midfielder ranking fifth among the Premier League’s best playmakers.

That makes him a player Newcastle cannot afford to give too much freedom in midfield. He will be hoping to carry that form into the encounter and add to his assist tally as Fulham look to find a way through their opponents.

2. His versatility

Another quality that makes Iwobi difficult to defend against is his versatility. The 30-year-old is comfortable playing in central midfield, where he can dictate the tempo, link up play and help Fulham progress the ball. However, he can also operate on either flank, giving Arbeloa the option to use him in wider attacking positions when needed.

This flexibility could present a difficult challenge for Newcastle, as Iwobi’s movement and changing positions may make it harder for their players to keep track of him.

If he starts in the middle, he can drift into wider areas to create overloads, while playing on the flank allows him to move inside and influence the game from central positions.

His ability to switch roles without losing his effectiveness gives Fulham another attacking edge and could force Newcastle to constantly adjust their defensive shape.

Iwobi, who also ranks among Fulham’s highest-rated players in the Premier League this season, will be hoping to make another statement performance in Saturday’s clash, with kickoff set for 4pm Nigerian Time.
