Arsenal’s win at Sporting CP boosts Champions League dreams of 3 Super Eagles stars

Super Eagles trio of Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze could be playing in the Champions League next season with Fulham, Afrik-Foot reports.

Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win over Sporting CP in Lisbon on Tuesday night could have huge consequences for clubs back in England, especially Fulham.

That victory confirmed that the Premier League will receive an extra Champions League place next season. In simple terms, finishing fifth, not just the usual top four, will now be enough to qualify for Europe’s biggest club competition.

This change has turned the race for Champions League places into a much wider contest. Fulham, currently sitting ninth, are only five points behind fifth place with seven matches left to play. What once seemed unlikely now feels possible.

The path is clear but difficult for Marco Silva’s side. They must win key matches, especially against teams directly above them like Liverpool and Aston Villa to stand a decent chance of picking the ticket. Their upcoming fixtures give them a real chance to close the gap, but there is little room for mistakes.

Goal difference could also be an issue. Fulham’s numbers are not as strong as some of their rivals, meaning they may need to earn more points rather than rely on tie-breakers.

Still, the opportunity is there. Arsenal’s result has changed the story of the season. Instead of chasing a distant dream, Fulham are now firmly part of the fight for a Champions League place, something the club has never achieved before.

Super Eagles trio driving Fulham’s push

At the heart of Fulham’s campaign are three Nigerian internationals; Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze.

Bassey has been a key figure in defence. Strong in tackles and calm on the ball, he helps Fulham build attacks from the back while also keeping things tight at the other end. His pace is especially important when the team plays a high defensive line.

Iwobi has been the creative force. Comfortable in several positions, the Super Eagles playmaker links midfield and attack, keeps possession moving and creates chances. His passing and decision-making have made him one of Fulham’s most important players this season.

Chukwueze, meanwhile, has added excitement and unpredictability. With his dribbling and speed, he stretches defences and creates space for others. Even in limited minutes, he has delivered goals and assists that have changed matches. Presently on loan at Fulham from AC Milan, the Cottagers are reportedly looking to make the transfer permanent. If the deal gets done, Chukwueze would be part of Fulham’s potential European adventure next season.

Together, the trio provide a strong spine for the team – defence, creativity and attacking threat. Their understanding, built partly from playing together for Nigeria, has helped Fulham stay competitive in tight games.

If Fulham do manage to finish in the top five, it would mark a historic moment. The club has never played in the Champions League. Their best European run came in the 2009/10 Europa League, where they reached the final before losing to Atlético Madrid. Former Super Eagles midfielder Dickson Etuhu was a part of that unlucky Fulham squad.

With Arsenal’s result opening the door, Fulham, and their Nigerian stars, now have a real chance to step through it.
