Taiwo Awoniyi could make his Coventry City debut against Arsenal on Friday, just days after completing a permanent move from Nottingham Forest in time for the Premier League curtain-raiser, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Nigeria international arrives with a point to prove at the top level, having scored 21 Premier League goals in 90 appearances during four years at Forest, and he gives Frank Lampard extra cover up front as Coventry return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.
Awoniyi is one of two Nigeria internationals in Lampard’s squad for the visit of the champions, alongside midfielder Frank Onyeka, who arrived permanently from Brentford this summer having been central to Coventry’s Championship title win.
Arsenal, meanwhile, arrive with their own momentum, having beaten Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield and strengthened Mikel Arteta’s title-winning squad with Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis.

Arsenal vs Coventry City: Match Preview
Arsenal ended the 2025-26 season as champions of England for the first time in 22 years, finishing on 85 points, seven clear of Manchester City in second, and securing the title with a game to spare.
The title was built on the division’s best defence, with Arsenal conceding just 27 goals in 38 games and David Raya keeping 19 clean sheets to win the Golden Glove for a third consecutive season.
Arteta’s pre-season had its share of bumps, with Arsenal beaten 3-1 by Real Betis in Dublin on August 5 and 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates four days later, although they earlier secured a 4-1 win over Girona before ending with a 1-1 draw against Como.
Those results were put into perspective on August 16, when Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard all on the scoresheet.

Coventry’s route to this fixture could hardly be more different, with Lampard’s promotion built on a Championship campaign in which the club scored 97 goals, the most in the division, while conceding 45.
Haji Wright led the goalscoring with 17 in the league, but the threat was shared widely, with Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante both reaching 13 and Victor Torp and Ephron Mason-Clark contributing 10 apiece.
Lampard has strengthened that group with permanent deals for two Nigeria internationals, midfielder Frank Onyeka and striker Taiwo Awoniyi, plus a big-money addition in midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.
Awoniyi, a 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup winner, spent four years at Nottingham Forest after loan spells away from Liverpool, scoring 23 goals and adding six assists in 103 appearances across all competitions for the Midlands club.
Pre-season brought wins for Coventry over Espanyol and Monaco, but Friday’s task is a considerable step up.

Arsenal vs Coventry City: Head-to-Head Record
Arsenal and Coventry have met on 76 occasions across their history, with the Gunners winning 43 times to Coventry’s 14, and 19 draws completing the overall picture.
The two clubs have not met in the league since February 2001, the season of Coventry’s relegation from the top flight, and their most recent competitive meeting came in the FA Cup in January 2014, when Arsenal won 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
In their 14 previous top-flight meetings specifically, Coventry won just once, drew five and lost eight, with that solitary victory also arriving in 2001.
That history offers context rather than a guide to Friday’s match, given a quarter of a century, several promotions and relegations, and two entirely rebuilt squads sit between the sides and their last meeting.
Team News: Awoniyi eyes Debut, Arsenal sweat on Saliba and Timber
Arsenal
Arsenal will again be without centre-back William Saliba, who is out with a back injury that Arteta has described as long-term, while Jurriën Timber remains sidelined with no return date confirmed.
That leaves Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel as the first-choice centre-back pairing, with summer signing Piero Hincapié the likeliest alternative from the bench.
Bruno Guimarães made his first competitive appearance for the club in the Community Shield and is expected to partner Declan Rice in a double pivot, with Rice himself introduced only as a second-half substitute against Manchester City as he continues working back to full match fitness.
Kai Havertz started at striker in the Community Shield and headed in from a Christos Tzolis cross for Arsenal’s second goal, and the pair look set to keep their places ahead of Viktor Gyökeres, who is fit and has retained penalty-taking duties.
Bukayo Saka, also used from the bench against City, is expected to return to the starting eleven in place of Noni Madueke.
Coventry City
Coventry’s build-up has been complicated by injuries, with top scorer Haji Wright missing the whole of pre-season with a quad problem and expected to remain out.
Jack Rudoni is still working his way back from shoulder surgery and is a doubt, and Ephron Mason-Clark sat out the friendly win over Monaco with a hamstring issue.
Onyeka, who arrived permanently from Brentford this summer after an initial loan spell, picked up a knock in that same Monaco game.
Ellis Simms, who scored 13 goals from just 15 starts in the Championship last season, is set to lead the line in Wright’s absence, meaning Awoniyi’s first involvement is more likely to come from the bench than in the starting eleven.

The Managers: Mikel Arteta vs Frank Lampard
Arteta, the 44-year-old Spaniard, delivered Arsenal’s first title in 22 years last season and followed it with Community Shield success over Manchester City.
His Arsenal side is built on control and a high press, and the Guimarães signing specifically targets the physical, tackling profile Arteta wants alongside Rice in central midfield.
Lampard took charge of Coventry in late November 2024, replacing caretaker Rhys Carr, and led the club to the Championship title in his first full season in charge.
He followed that up by signing a new contract in June 2026 that ties him to the club until 2029, and his Coventry side plays a direct, high-tempo 4-3-3 that will now be tested against Premier League opposition for the first time.

Tactical Preview: Arsenal vs Coventry City
Arsenal’s likely 4-2-3-1 gives them a two-man advantage in central midfield against Coventry’s three, with Rice and Guimarães able to rotate positions to overload Matt Grimes, Onyeka and Yirenkyi, a trio that has never played together in a competitive fixture.
Saka’s return to the right flank against Jay Dasilva looks like a direct route to goal, while Tzolis offers similar pace down the other side.
Coventry’s clearest route back into the game is through their wingers, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Loum Tchaouna, on the counter-attack, but that plan depends on winning enough of the ball in a congested midfield to launch it.
If the game is stretched late on, Awoniyi’s introduction would give Lampard a different kind of attacking presence than Simms, with more experience of Premier League defenders from his time at Forest.
