How Arthur Okonkwo’s 9 in 2 numbers could give Chelle another Super Eagles headache

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has enjoyed a superb start to life at English Championship side Charlton Athletic, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old completed a loan move to Charlton from Wrexham, where his future had become uncertain with just one year remaining on his contract.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham in 2023 on an initial loan deal from Arsenal before making the move permanent in 2024. Since then, he has made over 100 appearances for the club across all competitions.

The Nigerian goalkeeper was also influential in Wrexham’s impressive promotion campaign last season as they secured their place in the Championship after narrowly missing out on a playoff spot during the previous campaign.

Arthur Okonkwo’s superb start at Charlton

Okonkwo has wasted little time making his mark at Charlton and has already played a major role in their impressive start to the new Championship season.

Charlton have collected maximum points from their opening three matches and currently sit at the top of the standings, two points ahead of Wolves, Swansea City and QPR.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper joined the club after their opening game and has kept two clean sheets in his two appearances so far, making nine saves in the process.

He made his Charlton debut against West Ham United and produced an outstanding performance between the posts.

The Nigerian goalkeeper made eight saves against the Hammers and was named man of the match as Charlton secured a 2-1 victory over West Ham. He followed that up with another clean sheet last weekend, making one save in Charlton’s 1-0 win over Preston North End.

That means Okonkwo has made nine saves and kept two clean sheets in his first two appearances for the club, giving him an excellent start to life in the Championship.

Chelle faces major selection headache

Okonkwo’s form could present Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle with another selection dilemma ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nigeria will begin their qualifying campaign next month in a group featuring Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania, with the Super Eagles hoping to progress to the next stage.

One of the biggest decisions Chelle could face is in goal. Stanley Nwabali has been Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper since 2024, although he recently lost his place to Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

Okoye has also been in excellent form for Udinese and remains a strong candidate to start for the Super Eagles when the qualifiers begin.

Nwabali, meanwhile, was out of the picture earlier this year due to club-related issues but has since returned to Chippa United, where he has enjoyed a strong start to his career at the club once again.

Then there is Okonkwo, who has also firmly entered the conversation. The goalkeeper became eligible to represent Nigeria after completing his switch of international allegiance from England earlier this year. He made his Super Eagles debut in May and helped Nigeria win the Unity Cup 2026, keeping two clean sheets in his two appearances.

However, Okoye was preferred for Nigeria’s friendly matches against Poland and Portugal in June, although Okonkwo remained part of the squad.

With the 2027 AFCON qualifiers fast approaching, Chelle now has three goalkeepers capable of making a strong case for the starting position.

Nwabali brings experience and has been Nigeria’s first choice for much of the past two years, while Okoye has regained his place in the conversation with his performances for Udinese.

Okonkwo, however, could make the decision even more difficult if he continues his excellent start at Charlton. His nine saves and two clean sheets in his first two games have already provided a strong reminder of his quality, and regular Championship football could further strengthen his case.

The goalkeeper is certainly in contention for a place in Chelle’s squad for the upcoming qualifiers, and if his form continues, he could even give the Super Eagles coach another difficult decision to make over who should start in goal.
