Arthur Okonkwo’s camp breaks silence on Super Eagles links amid Nigeria switch speculation

Published on by

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has declined to publicly address growing speculation over a potential international switch to Nigeria, Afrik Foot reports.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, who has been strongly linked with the Super Eagles in recent months, remains non-committal despite increasing interest from the Nigeria Football Federation.

According to Nigerian journalist Shina Oludare, Okonkwo’s representatives responded to enquiries on Thursday, stating:

“I know there have been stories in the press about Arthur and representing Nigeria but this has all come from unofficial sources so is not something we wish to speak publicly about at the moment.”

Nigeria future remains uncertain despite strong links

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo is eligible to represent both England and Nigeria.

The former Arsenal academy graduate featured for England at youth level but is yet to earn a senior cap for the Three Lions.

His situation has attracted significant attention in Nigeria, especially following reports of talks with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle late last year.

While there were claims that FIFA had approved a nationality switch earlier in 2026, conflicting reports suggest that certain administrative steps may still be pending, leaving his international status unresolved for now.

Meanwhile, Okonkwo continues to impress at Wrexham AFC, where he has established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

After initially joining on loan, the 1.98m goalkeeper secured a permanent move in 2024 and has since made over 60 appearances, playing a key role in Wrexham’s push in the Championship.

His commanding presence, shot-stopping ability, and distribution have made him one of the most talked-about Nigerian-eligible goalkeepers in Europe.

With Nigeria’s goalkeeping department still under scrutiny — featuring names like Stanley Nwabali and Francis Uzoho — Okonkwo is widely viewed as a potential upgrade.

For now, however, the player’s camp appears focused on keeping discussions private, leaving fans and officials waiting as the Super Eagles continue their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
