“Morale is high” — Ex-Aston Villa man backs Zimbabwe ahead of Super Eagles Unity Cup clash

Published on by

Former Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has expressed optimism regarding Zimbabwe’s chances against Nigeria when the two teams lock horns in the opening game of the Unity Cup on Tuesday, Afrik-Foot reports.

Nigeria will begin their Unity Cup title defense at the Valley on Tuesday, taking on a Zimbabwe side that has denied them victory in their last three meetings.

In fact, the Super Eagles have failed to score more than once against the Warriors in their last four encounters, with Nigeria’s last victory over Zimbabwe dating back to 2014.

Given this recent history, the Warriors will undoubtedly be confident of securing a positive result.

While the three-time African champions have several quality players in camp—including Femi Azeez, Terem Moffi, and Philip Otele, who can all cause havoc on their day—the Zimbabweans have some talent of their own.

Their squad features the likes of Marshall Munetsi, Tawanda Chirewa, Tino Kadewere, and Nakamba, their talismanic midfielder who is also the captain of the side.

What Marvelous Nakamba’s Said About Super Eagles Match

Having faced Nigeria’s Super Eagles twice before, Zimbabwe captain Marvelous Nakamba understands exactly what it takes to go up against the three-time African champions.

In a pre-match interview, he noted that he has been highly impressed by the squad’s energy and preparation.

”We’ve been preparing well for the match tomorrow against Nigeria,” Nakamba told ZIFA. “Everyone is pushing each other in camp and morale is high, so we’re looking forward to the game tomorrow.”

The fixture promises to be an enthralling encounter, with a confident Zimbabwe side looking to exploit a transitional Nigeria squad featuring many new faces. The winner of the match will advance to the final on May 30 to face either India or Jamaica.
