Awoniyi’s scuffed chance sees Fulham survive against Nottingham Forest

Five Super Eagles stars were in action at the City Ground in Nottingham Forest’s goalless draw against Fulham, Afrik Foot reports.

Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi were included in Fulham’s starting lineup, while Ola Aina was the other Nigerian starting for the Reds.

However, none of these players were able to impact the game positively to give their team a much-needed boost in attack.

Nottingham Forest vs Fulham: How the game went

The home side got the game off to a promising start as Vitor Pereira’s men opted to kick things off with long balls in the first five minutes.

Elliot Anderson had the game’s first attempt in the 11th minute. The Forest midfielder showed a great burst of pace to break in behind, before cutting onto his left foot, but his effort went wide.

Fulham clicked into gear, and Calvin Bassey came close on the 20th-minute mark. The Nigerian midfielder headed towards goal from Alex Iwobi’s free-kick, but his effort was straight at Mats Sels.

Dan Ndoye was brought on for Nicolas Dominguez at half-time, and the winger immediately put Bassey in trouble, and the former Rangers centre-back had no option but to bundle the attacker down.

Referee Samuel Barrott immediately pointed to the penalty spot, but after a short VAR review, Ndoye was confirmed to be offside, and Calvin Bassey got away with one.

Ola Aina came close as well. The full-back found himself surprisingly isolated with Calvin Bassey in a 1v1. The former Chelsea man opted to go on his left foot before unleashing a shot that was denied by the crossbar.

Samuel Chukwueze came on for Fulham in the 62nd minute, replacing Oscar Bobb, while Taiwo Awoniyi replaced Igor Jesus a minute later.

Ndoye thought he’d broken the deadlock in the 65th minute after beating Bernd Leno with a deft finish, but again, VAR chalked the goal off as he was ruled to have been in an offside position when Neco Williams’ pass was played.

Taiwo Awoniyi huffed and puffed, but his first chance came with two minutes left until the ninety.

The Kwara-born striker was played through on goal and was left with Leno, but after just 45 minutes of Premier League action in January, his cold feet got the better of him as he sent his shot wide.

The former Union Berlin striker had a crack at it again four minutes later, but his attempt was blocked by Kenny Tete.

Forest’s draw against Fulham now sees them level on points with 18th-placed West Ham United, on the brink of relegation to the EFL Championship.

Fulham meanwhile, are now back into the bottom half of the English Premier League table.
