Bundesliga interest in Akinsanmiro: What a Germany move offers over staying in Italy

Published on by

Ebenezer Akinsanmiro’s anticipated permanent move to Pisa has collapsed, leaving the Super Eagles midfielder back at Inter Milan, and Bundesliga clubs Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach have entered the race for his signature, Afrik Foot reports.

The breakdown of the Pisa deal was unexpected. The Serie B club had exercised the €7.5 million purchase clause in Akinsanmiro’s loan agreement, and a permanent transfer seemed straightforward, until it collapsed during the final exchange of documents.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Pisa failed to provide the financial guarantees required for the deal to be registered with the relevant football authorities, a consequence of the club’s relegation from Serie A, which has significantly reduced their projected revenues and financial abilities.

With the required guarantees not submitted, the paperwork could not be ratified, the buy option expired, and Akinsanmiro is now back at the San Siro.

Inter, having initially set a floor of €7.5 million for a permanent sale, are now demanding up to €10 million from interested clubs. Serie A side Bologna have also made enquiries, as has an unnamed Premier League club, but the Bundesliga interest from Bremen and Mönchengladbach is understood to be the most concrete at this stage, as per Buli News.

Akinsanmiro to Pisa – A blessing in disguise

The uncomfortable truth about Akinsanmiro’s situation is that Serie B, with a relegated Pisa, was never the ideal destination for a 21-year-old midfielder with ambitions to be a first-team player for the Super Eagles.

The step down from the top flight would have placed him in Italy’s second division at a moment when his career needed an upward trajectory and consistent first-team football. The Pisa move would have gradually reduced his visibility to the national team scouts and the European scouts who had been tracking him throughout his loan spell.

The Bundesliga changes that case completely. Germany’s top flight is one of the most technically demanding leagues in the world, but has also served as a platform where several Nigerians like Taiwo Awoniyi, Victor Boniface, Anthony Ujah and Felix Agu have thrived.

Bremen and Mönchengladbach present different possibilities, but both carry genuine appeal. Werder Bremen finished 15th in the Bundesliga last season, while Mönchengladbach finished 12th on the Bundesliga table. However, Die Fohlen are a club with a richer recent history and a stronger infrastructure.

What a Germany move offers over staying in Italy

The case for the Bundesliga over remaining in Italy is solely considering Akinsanmiro’s development.

The first is visibility. Inter Milan were never going to hand him first-team opportunities, except for massive first-team injuries and the Italian clubs genuinely interested in him – Pisa in Serie B and Bologna in Serie A, represent either a step down or a fierce competition for minutes.

The Bundesliga, by contrast, is the third most-watched league in the world and is broadcast globally. Regular football in Germany would make him known, domestically and internationally, in a way that Serie B football simply cannot.

The other is the financial and contract leverage for Inter Milan. The 2010 treble winners are asking €10 million for a player with one Super Eagles cap and 24 Serie A appearances, a fee that reflects genuine belief in his ceiling rather than just his current output.

A successful season in the Bundesliga would push that market value significantly higher, strengthening both his negotiating position for future contracts and his place in Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers squad.

According to the reports from Italy, a future in Germany seems more likely for the former Sampdoria midfielder, and that could be the best move for the youngster, as long as playing time is guaranteed.
