Former Burnley and Rangers striker Steven Thompson has delivered a strong endorsement of Kelechi Iheanacho, Afrik-Foot reports.
It is a message the Nigerian forward will hope reaches Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle at a crucial point in his international career.
Thompson was speaking after Iheanacho’s match-winning performance for Celtic in their Scottish Cup semi-final victory over St Mirren, a game that showed the striker’s quality and sharpness. The tie had ended 2-2 in normal time, but Iheanacho changed the story when he came on late in the second half, replacing Yang Hyun-jun.
In extra time, the Nigerian forward scored twice as Celtic powered to a 6-2 win, sealing their place in the final in dramatic fashion.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Thompson was full of praise for Iheanacho’s all-round ability, insisting the striker offers far more than just goals.

“We talk about his goals, which were both really well taken,” Thompson said. “But his link play shows a knowledge of the game that the others don’t bring. He’s the most rounded striker at Celtic by a mile.”
That assessment highlights a key strength in Iheanacho’s game – his intelligence, movement, and ability to bring others into play – qualities that have often set him apart throughout his career.
The 29-year-old joined Celtic as a free agent last September after a difficult spell in Spain with Sevilla, where inconsistency affected his form. He made a bright start in Scotland, scoring twice in his first three league matches, but an untimely injury disrupted his progress.
Now fully fit again, Iheanacho appears to be rediscovering his rhythm at just the right moment, as Celtic push for a domestic double.

Iheanacho: A second chance for Nigeria?
While Iheanacho is rebuilding his club career, his international future remains uncertain.
Since taking charge in January 2025, Eric Chelle has consistently left the forward out of his plans. Iheanacho was dropped from the final squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, despite initially being included in a larger provisional list. He was also omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a notable decision given his past importance to the team.
Chelle’s selections have reflected a shift in direction. The coach has preferred a faster, more intense attacking style, building his team around players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze. Concerns over Iheanacho’s club form during his time at Sevilla and Middlesbrough also played a part in his exclusion.

At the same time, Chelle has made it clear he wants discipline and focus, famously insisting that the national team camp “is not for comedy skits,” a statement seen as part of a broader effort to reshape the team’s culture.
Even so, the door may not be completely closed for Iheanacho.
The upcoming international window in May and June 2026 could offer Iheanacho a route back. Nigeria are set to play four matches, including the Unity Cup in London and high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
The Unity Cup, in particular, is expected to serve as a testing ground for fringe players and those hoping to force their way back into the squad.
It represents a clear opportunity to make a statement for Iheanacho, especially if his recent form at Celtic continues.
