Reigning African champions Nigeria women’s national football team will today, Saturday, February 28, face long-time rivals Cameroon women’s national football team at the Military Stadium, Yaoundé, Afrik-Foot reports.

The encounter marks the first leg of an international friendly double-header designed to help both nations prepare for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off next month.

The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, with the Super Falcons hoping to extend their strong recent dominance over the Indomitable Lionesses.

Cameroon missed out on qualification for the last WAFCON tournament and are eager to re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite. Playing at home offers them a perfect opportunity to test themselves against the continent’s benchmark side.

Nigeria arrive with confidence after reclaiming the continental crown at WAFCON 2024, where they defeated all challengers to lift the trophy for a record-extending 10th time. The immediate mission for the Super Falcons is clear, build momentum and fine-tune combinations ahead of their title defence.

The Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and Malawi, while Cameroon will compete against Ghana, Mali and Cape Verde.

Nigeria v Cameroon: Head-to-head record

Nigeria and Cameroon have developed one of African women’s football’s fiercest rivalries. The teams have met 13 times in recent years, with the Super Falcons holding a clear advantage.

The Super Falcons have recorded eight victories, Cameroon have three wins, and two matches ended in draws. Encouragingly for the African queens, they are unbeaten in their last six meetings against the Lionesses, winning four of those games.

Falcons head coach Justine Madugu stressed that results matter but development remains the bigger objective.

Every time we play, whether friendly or competitive, the expectation is to win. But winning is not the ultimate goal. The major objective is to assess the players, particularly the new ones, and see what they bring to the team so we can build on that.”

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie also highlighted the psychological edge Nigeria carry into the game.

The last time we played against them, we won. I remember two years ago we were here during the Olympic qualifiers, and we also won. So we’ve beaten them a couple of times. It’s been four games in a row, and it’s been four wins for Nigeria. But being a friendly and on their home soil, they will want to come out very hard and prove a point. We just have to stay focused.”

Match prediction

This fixture promises intensity despite its friendly status. Cameroon will rely heavily on home support and physical aggression to disrupt Nigeria’s rhythm, especially after missing the last continental tournament and seeking redemption.

However, the Super Falcons possess greater squad depth, stronger tactical organisation, and superior recent competitive experience. Their blend of established stars and emerging players should give them control in midfield and sharper attacking transitions.

Expect Cameroon to start aggressively, pressing high and attempting to unsettle the Falcons early. But as the game progresses, Nigeria’s technical quality and defensive stability, anchored by Nnadozie, could prove decisive.

Tip: Cameroon 1–2 Nigeria
